Pre-Header: The technology is changing how shoppers find inventory — and what it means for your store

What MCP Means for Your Dealership — And Why It Matters Now
A few weeks ago Dealer Software Success invited Corey Lydstone, founder of CarGenius.ai, to a conversation about AI. We talked about a technology called MCP — Model Context Protocol — and what it actually does at the dealership level. It sounds technical but has very practical implications for how shoppers will find you ……….. in the next two to three years.
The problem MCP solves
When a shopper uses an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or whatever they prefer — to research a vehicle, that AI is largely working from stale or generic data. It might know the trim levels for a specific vehicle but has no idea what you actually have on your lot right now, what your current price is, or why a shopper should choose your store over the one across town. The same gap exists when your inventory sits on third-party listing sites.
MCP changes that. It’s a live data connection that lets AI assistants query your actual inventory, current pricing, specs, store policies, and service capabilities in real time — with your permission settings controlling what’s exposed. When a shopper asks their AI assistant “find me a certified pre-owned Highlander within 20 miles under $38,000,” an MCP-enabled dealership shows up with accurate, current information. One that isn’t connected just… doesn’t.
What CarGenius is doing today
CarGenius installs an MCP server directly on a dealership’s website, powering a chat widget where shoppers describe what they want in plain language and get precise answers from live inventory. No showing up for a vehicle that sold last week. No vague responses that send shoppers elsewhere.
The near-term vision is bigger: a shopper’s AI agent proactively searches across multiple dealers and surfaces the right vehicle before the shopper ever opens a browser. Dealers who are connected get found. The ones who aren’t, don’t.
The part that stuck with me
Corey made a point worth sitting with: as AI gets better at matching the right vehicle to the right buyer, the differentiator shifts. It may not be the dealership with the best SEO or the most aggressive ad spend that wins. It will be who has the best customer experience, the strongest service reputation, the most transparent processes, and the clearest local value — because those are the signals AI will use to recommend one dealer over another.
Where things stand
MCP is early. Most dealership software providers haven’t implemented it yet — that’s one of the things we track in the DSS AI rankings across 900+ solutions. CarGenius ranks high in Sales department AI and is among the earliest actively building toward this future.
